The holidays are fast approaching, which means that you are probably getting ready to hang lights on your home. If you have vinyl siding, you may be a little concerned over the best way to do this. You also don't want to take any chances with damaging your home. The following tips can help you with the process.
Tip #1: Use newer LED décor
Generally, vinyl siding is relatively resistant to minor heat damage. Still, if you are planning to put up a lot of lights, opt for LED bulbs as opposed to the less expensive incandescent. Not only will LED bulbs save you on electrical costs, they also put off almost no heat. This way you won't have to worry about any warping or discoloration from the incandescent bulb heat.
Tip #2: Hang from the gutter
Wherever possible, hang your holiday lights from the gutter. It's never a good idea to put nail holes into the vinyl siding or eaves. Fortunately, there are specially made clips available that are designed to clip on to the gutters to secure your lights. Even better, these clips don't interfere with the function of the gutters. There are even clips designed to work on the edges of covered gutters.
Tip #3: Use siding clips
Siding clips are also necessary. These will secure light strings or other types of décor where it crosses an expanse of siding. They slide beneath a siding panel so there is no need to make a hole. Use these as needed. Not only will they better secure your décor, they also prevent lights and other items from banging against the siding in windy weather, which will prevent holes and cracks to the vinyl siding.
Tip #4: Use artificial greenery
If you love the look of wreaths or evergreen garlands, then you may want to use them on the outside of your home. The problem is that real greenery can hold moisture and foster mold growth on its organic surface. This mold can then spread to your siding, where it stains the vinyl. Instead, use artificial versions. Modern artificial decorations look real, but they are less likely to harbor mold and mildew. Also, make sure you take them down as soon as the holiday passes to further cut down on the chances of moisture and mold.
